HEY NERDS! so i've got a big nice nasty juicy throbbing present for all of you who have recently been on an upgrading spree for BC2.
Remember that ATI 5870 that i got and was touting as the way to go with graphics? well, i totally spaced on the original spec sheet back in september which at the very bottom said:
"support for stereoscopic 3D"
most people dismissed this as meaning that yeah yeah yeah, the cards could handle you throwing on those outdated "avatar" type 3d glasses, and it would look like shit, but still work.
no no no my friends, stereoscopic 3D is the new hotness, as i'm sure you've read an article or two about nVidia's proprietary stereoscopic 3D solution.
So i thought that ATI users were left out in the dust, but who cares, you need to buy one of those 120hz samsung monitors which are absurdidly expensive, right? also 3D is for fags, right?
but it turns out that ATI has something much better up their sleeve. and it works on RF instead of nvid's infared, so there's no stutter (which people have reported, even after spending up to $1000 on the nessicary hardware.)
So these new glasses are USB powered, and aslong as you have a 5000 series ATI card (which i think 4 or 5 of us now have) then all you need is a 120hz monitor. There's a viewsonic out there for $250, but the samsung has dropped from $550 to about $300 from most american (and canadian) retailers. that is if you can find em in stock.
newer better monitors will roll out, and the glasses won't be out until Q3 2010, but the good news is that with a 5000 series ati card, you're already compliant. And if you want you can get a samsung today, and be gaming at 120hz (worth it anyways in my opinion) and then grab the glasses when they drop in the latter half of the year.
if you've never heard of any of this before, checkout nvidia's page about it. the short of it is that the industry is moving towards a 3D blu-ray standard, avatar will help push this, so this is the time to push for manufacturors and software makers. but there are sooooo few movies out there that support 3D, the real market is gamers, as there are many games which can easily support full 3d functionality already, and into the future, it will be standard.
oh and i'm sure that there will be 3d porn too.

actually, looks like there's abunch fo 120hz 3d monitors about to drop, so i'll keep my eyes peeled.
