BAD ASS!

being a huge fan of all things crytek, this i'm super psyched about.

if any of you remember the hype surrounding HL2 and DOOM3. there was a little known game called FARCRY which actually came out BEFORE either of those other 2 blockbuster titles. and utilized technology far superior than both of them combined. you had your volumetric lighting, crazy shaders, huge environments (the first REAL huge map FPS). also it introduced bump mapping ontop of normal mapping. dymanic shadows en masse, sigh, so many tech papers glossed over, so many hours i'll never get back.

anyways, Crysis, and it's expansion Warhead were fun as shit, alot more fun, immersive, challenging, beautiful, and badass than the Halflife 2 episodes IMO. but nobody played it except me and some ai bot somewhere, cause we were the only ones with computers decent enough to play.

well now everyone has a decked out computer to play BC2, so this should mean a new crop of soldiers to take on Crysis2. there's been a demo with every crytek game so far, so i'll be looking forward to playing it this christmas.

here's a link to JUST the gameplay made available so far. and this was obviously from a console. so if you have a PC that's more powerful than an xbox360, then you should expect equal or better performance.

Crysis 2: Multiplayer in the Superhero Sandbox
An early look at this week's Xbox Live exclusive multiplayer demo and more.

Any preview of Crysis 2 is invariably going to be torn between two things (or should be, anyway): how it looks, and how it plays. When I checked out a single-player section of the PC version of Crysis 2 a month or so ago, I was struck as much by how well it controlled on a 360 pad as how fantastic that version looked, and I was also left with some serious questions as to how it would run on consoles. Last week, things were switched around a bit as I spent time with Crysis 2's multiplayer on the Xbox 360, and I was struck by two things: how great it looked, and how not so great it played.

More Crysis 2 (Limited Edition) Videos

Thankfully, it looks like most of the graphical issues we saw at Gamescom last year and last year's multiplayer beta on 360 last year have been worked out, as Crysis 2 is clearly in the running for best looking console game out there. It's the atmosphere and lighting that really impresses. Levels are huge with a ton of routes and traversal options, and the constant shifts between darkness and daylight in Skyline, the level included in this week's demo, in particular are striking.

Crysis 2 was so striking, in fact, that it took me a few minutes with the game to realize that something wasn't quite right with Crysis 2's controls on the 360. Eventually, it hit me: Crysis 2 on 360 has some seriously laggy controller response. While some of Crysis 2's control idiosyncrasies make sense - a delay between hitting the jump button and flying into the air makes you feel like a cyborg hurling himself upward - simple things like aiming and strafing just aren't as responsive as they should be. What breaks my heart is the theory that this might be tied to the preview build's framerate - if Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical of TimeSplitters and, uh, Haze fame) can tone the graphics down in multiplayer somewhat to get something that feels more responsive, it would be the right move, but it would still hurt my heart a little.

This wasn't the only issue I experienced; there's also a sense at times that the multiplayer sandboxes might be too much box and not enough player-sand for the max player count on consoles of 6-on-6. For team deathmatch (or team instant-action, as Crytek is calling it), this is fine enough, since players can only score when they encounter one another. But for objective type matches, like Crash Site (the Conquest style mode included in this week's demo), it takes what seems like forever to make it from your spawning point to the action when you die, which really kills the game's momentum. Of course, while precise PC player counts are still being finalized, I was able to cajole the word "more" out of Crysis 2's producer

Granted, Crysis 2 has a couple of months left before it hits retail, so this is hopefully something that can be fixed - and the control issues certainly weren't present in the PC build of the game I played a month ago. If Crytek can address the responsiveness problems in Crysis 2, the multiplayer could be something unique and cool. The nano-suit powers both active and passive lead to a range of combat options not found in other shooters. The constant need to switch from armor mode to stealth to speed requires quick thinking, and Crytek has done a great job of making suit abilities quickly accessible - and, easily mixed and matched, a particular problem in Crysis's last multiplayer release that the developers mentioned to me when I was checking out the game. With some luck, we'll all be power-stomping each other from rooftops when Crysis 2 releases in March.

looks cool, but the whole invisible thing pretty much kills the game for me.

2142 you could go invisible too, didn't kill the game at all.

thing you gotta remember is that you're not ever %100 invisible, you really distort the light around you, and you can see people pretty clearly if you just stop and look. if you start running around like a chicken with your head cut off like it's a CoD corner shooter, well then you're gonna miss people and get pwned. this is why i'm hoping that there's alot of noobs who play this.

it's hard to describe without playing, but the graphics are so realistic, that you can see clearly that you can't hide your shadow even with active camo on. so if you see a vague blur with a shadow running across in the open, well then you see how the active camo isn't anywhere near %100 efficient. \

This provides a different layer of tactics, because you have to really know what areas of the level are in shadow or not. And since all levels have real-time day/night cycles, then where the shadows in the level are at any given time are completely dynamic. you end up really feeling like a futuristic navy seal commando the way you have to know your environment, adapting between sneaky and rambo styles of gameplay.

also, if you're in armor mode, you have twice the HP as someone who's invisible. so if you both engage that the same time, you'll pwn them everytime. you just gotta use your brain a bit more. which i'm always for.

yeah, single player was always super duper epic. MP was an aquired taste.

MP this time is done by the 70 person team that used to be "Free Radical" which was bought out and is now "Crytek UK". So it might be different from other Crytek MP titles. Seems to be trying to be more like other FPS shooters on the market.

Free Radical is made up of former RARE employees, who gave us titles like GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, and DonkeyKong Country in the 90's.

minnimum pc specs just released:

* Internet connection required for activation
* OS: XP/Vista/Windows 7
* CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, AMD Athlon 64 x2 2Ghz or better
* 2 GB RAM
* HDD: 9 GB
* DVD ROM: 8x
* GPU: NVIDIA 8800 GT 512MB RAM, ATI 3850HD 512Mb RAM or better
* Keyboard, mouse, or Microsoft Xbox 360 controller for Windows

keep in mind that this is the new minimum, as in it'll look like a console, as this system is a 4 year old system that they spec'ed. i can assure you that people with newer rigs will reap a much better looking game. shit playing Crysis 1 on the "enthusiast" settings, my 5870 i7 DDR3 setup barely maintains 30fps.

just wait until you see the videos that compare how the game looks/feels on PC vs. consoles. I've read that it's horribly laggy on the xbox360 demo right now, like a half second delay when firing a gun, looking left/right etc. sounds pretty terribad. this is one title that was made for the PC, and THEN ported to the console, not the other way around. gotta give it respect for that fact alone.

cause people are really REALLY interested in this game?

that and it's almost a year old...

Battlefield 3
Portal 2
Crysis 2

3 "AAA" quality titles, all of them made for the PC first, then ported, not the other way around.

so i'm looking forward to these new gameplay mechanics, i like it when FPS games try something new, i don't think i'll ever buy another generic military first person shooter again in my life. Wasted too much on CoD and MoH bullshit for years.

who knows if people will like these "perks" or not, as i'm sure some will just think that it's gay alien lazer future bullshit. but one thing that we can agree on, is that this game LOOKS fucking boss, and that's just on shitty fucking consoles! imagine how 1337 it'll be pwning up on a PC. can't wait to start kicking cars onto people's faces.

also... the PC crysis community is a huge mod community, and most of the servers out there were modded in some capacity, so there'll be "vanilla" servers, and i imagine a fair number of modded servers, with none of the modules like tracker, seeing all tracers, and seeing red enemy outlines. i can understand how people wouldn't want that all the time, just when they're in the mood for some arcadey shit. the fun part in crysis was over the massive levels actually tracking your prey, taking them out one at a time without being spotted, it really nailed the stealth part of modern combat. believe it or not, i don't think most military outfits run around like CoD or MoH just firing like a noob wildly into the streets.
