i wasn't aware it was coming out so soon.

i played the beta a little. it was almost exactly the same as the first game, with some improved graphics and slightly different units.

i might pick it up at some point, but im not in a rush to get it.

BS, command and conquers were better IMO, in the beginning. I just couldn't get into that game.

Haven't touched an RTS game since FPS Multiplayer came out. Never liked the whole automated attacking shit. Never touching one again as long as there is an FPS game to play.

they jsut finished the second phase of the beta, it expired 2 days ago on monday.

i've been in love with blizzard RTSes since Warcraft 2. CnC was beast though too, infinite unit count, badass weaponry, alot better than war2 in some respects.

but SC2 is fun, i can actually play the game itself and not be bored. with Warcraft3, i just played the custom maps for the last 5 years, didn't even try to play the real game, it was too fucking boring, also it'd take 45-60 minutes jsut to get started. *zzzzz* SC2 you can have a good game in 15 minutes, fully fleshed out, my kinda game.

but anyone who plays blizzard RTSes knows that the gems are in the custom maps that people build. not just custom levels, but whole custom rulesets:

-tower wars
-DotA
-tower defense
-evolution
-footman wars
-wintermaul
-castle wars
-battlecraft

too many to list. they're their own games. also in SC2 you can fuck with the engine as to make it a first person shooter, a 3rd person shooter. actually using WSAD keys, to go through a map RPG style. really seeing what the community does with these new tools it gonna be great. i've been playing custom maps in beta since i got my 3 keys earlier this year, and loving it.

also with regards to it looking like the first game. yeah, not a big suprize i don't think. warcraft 3 was pretty similar to warcraft 2. as was diablo 2 to diablo 1 (and soon to be diablo 3).

the graphics are nice yeah, but it's just a more streamlined game. there's new unit balances, along with old favorites. protoss for instance plays much more like a beastly high tech alien superpower than the first game. and the zerg swarm mechanics are really well thought out in how fast you can expand across half the map if you know what you're doing. terrans are terrans for the mostpart, not much seems to have changed cosmedically, but gameplay alterations are decently abundant.

also the new battle.net is sexy and a very pleasing experience for anyone who's used to the old system. matchmaking is actually good and works. and getting into populated custom maps is a BREEZE! used to be a big pain, waiting for a lobby to fill up.

went to a midnight event at ebgames, so many fucking koreans! and they were all at the front of the line. bastards.

anyways, i'm installing now, sure to be epic, bla bla bla.

one thing worth noting is that if you get a copy in-store, you put that cd-key into a battle.net account, and you have instant downloadable access to the game client without having to use the dvd. so you get the best of both worlds, a hard copy, and infinite access to a digital copy with just one purchase.

Tell Blizzard: Welcome to 2003!

I'll pick it up sometime. RTS games are fun. Hell, SC1 was my first online game. Let me know how it is, etc. I'm almost more interested in the single player campaign...even though they fucking pre-nerfed it.

Are they still releasing the single player campaign through 3 different releases? Fucking assholes.

Standing in line at midnight and playing, and then having to go to a job in the morning would suck.

I'm still convinced that work is for suckers.

okay, so it's 4pm the next day, and i'm most of the way through the singleplayer campaign. playing it through on hard so i'm trying to stretch the experience as far as possible. haven't slept yet.

like any blizzard game, you don't buy it for the singleplayer, but it's a well thought-out, polished, welcome addition. but after 20 missions out of 26, the SP is really no different from warcraft 3 with different units.

decent variety with missions, keeps it feeling about as fresh as they can do with using the same units over and over again. (each new mission you unlock ONE new unit. zzz) so yeah, i don't think that it was meant to be grinded into oblivion like i'm doing, it's meant to compliment the online play.

of which i played a few custom maps, and man oh man is that shit great fun. haven't even played my first real SC2 match online in the ladders yet, to me that's secondary to custom maps, but both will give me hundreds of hours of fun now, and for years to come. played warcraft 3 pretty much since it came out, never deleted it from my hardrive, keep coming back to it.
