So I finally picked up a new headset. My first gaming headset.
I picked up the Corsair HS1A :

They have 50mm drivers, paid $70 for it.
I'm relatively impressed for that price point. I could have waited for the Corsair Vengeance 1300's but they would have been more $ anyways.
I have a pair of pretty high quality BOSE headphones at work, so I know what high quality headphones sound like and these definitely aren't super high end.
That being said, they have good detail but don't fill in the full package when listening to music or movies. They're missing that deep bass and fine crispness you get with high quality headphones.
For games, they work really well, I was hearing ambient noises in BF:BC2 I had never heard before with speakers. The mic is OK, it sounds different than my Logitech $25 headset but still has similar quality, I may just sound a little more muffled but closer to the input.
There is no directional sound for hearing where footsteps are coming from, but to be honest, I have been trying to test how valuable that is with speakers and it really doesn't work that well in BC2. That might change in BF3, time will tell.
Overall I would recommend these for $70, they have decent sound for movies and audio, and great sound for games. Good construction and a half decent mic.
But they are definitely not Uber quality.
In the end you get what you pay for.
My only complaint is that they block out the outside sounds so well, that you can't hear your own voice when you speak, so I have no idea if I'm yelling or whispering. It's going to take some getting used to for sure.
